Recover Vehicles After Garage Demolition

Quick Answer

On patch 1. 0. 3 you do not lose vehicles when you demolish a Garage. The official patch notes say vehicles kept in a demolished Garage move to another Garage, or wait for the next Garage you build.

On patch 1.0.3 you do not lose vehicles when you demolish a Garage. The official patch notes say vehicles kept in a demolished Garage move to another Garage, or wait for the next Garage you build. To get them back, go to any Garage you own, open its vehicle store and use Call back on the vehicle. If you have no Garage left, build one first; your vehicles are waiting for it.

The limitation is history. In the launch builds of October 23, demolishing a Garage deleted the vehicles inside, and players reported losing the vehicle, its upgrades and its cargo. The 1.0.3 notes describe how demolition works from now on. They do not say that vehicles deleted before the patch are restored, and they do not mention cargo. Check your Garage store to see what your save still counts as owned.

Patch 1.0.3 also changed how Garages handle vehicles in general. Any Garage can now call back, store and upgrade the vehicles you own, and a Garage will no longer offer to sell you a vehicle you already own. That second change is useful when recovering a fleet, because the store tells you what the game still thinks belongs to you.

How to Recover Your Vehicles on Patch 1.0.3

  1. Make sure you are on version 1.0.3 or later. Restart Steam so the update downloads. In co-op, every crewmate must be on 1.0.3 to play together.
  2. Go to a Garage you still own. Any Garage works on 1.0.3; it does not have to be the one that held the vehicle.
  3. Open the Garage's vehicle store. Owned vehicles are listed with a Call back option instead of a purchase price.
  4. Select Call back for the vehicle you want. The Garage brings the selected vehicle into its central bay.
  5. Drive it out before calling the next one. A Garage handles one selected vehicle in its bay at a time, so clear the bay first.
  6. Check its upgrades and hopper. Open the vehicle's upgrade options at the Garage and confirm the levels you remember. Note whether its hopper is empty.

If a vehicle you expected does not appear with Call back, go to the troubleshooting list near the end of this page.

If You Have No Garage Left

If the Garage you demolished was your only one, the vehicles have nowhere to appear yet. On 1.0.3 they wait for the next Garage you build.

  1. Equip the Building Tool and open the build menu.
  2. Place a new Garage. It cost $200 at launch. Choose a spot with room for the unloading area and a conveyor route to the Depot.
  3. Use the 1.0.3 foundation change if needed. Garages can now stand across several square foundations, which was not possible in the launch build.
  4. Open the new Garage's store and use Call back for each vehicle in turn.

Plan the new Garage's position carefully. Players report that removing a building returns only part of its price, so a second misplaced Garage is another loss.

Keep a Second Garage as a Safety Net

On 1.0.3, the simplest way to make any Garage demolition painless is to have another Garage already standing. Vehicles from a demolished Garage move to another one, so with a second Garage in place they have an immediate home and you can call them back straight away.

A second Garage is also useful for its own sake. Players running large bases built a second Garage with its own production area rather than rebuilding the first, and any Garage can now call back, store and upgrade every vehicle you own. If you are reorganising your base anyway, build the new Garage first, check that its unloading area reaches a working conveyor, and only then remove the old one. That order means there is never a moment when your vehicles are waiting without a Garage.

Check Whether a Vehicle Still Belongs to You

Because the 1.0.3 store no longer offers vehicles you already own, it doubles as an ownership check:

  • Shown with Call back: the vehicle is still owned. Recall it.
  • Shown with a purchase price: the save does not count it as owned. This is what you would expect for a vehicle deleted by a launch-build demolition.
  • Not listed at all: check that you are in the right world and on the right version, then look at another Garage.

Do not buy a replacement until you have checked every Garage you own and confirmed your version. Buying a vehicle the game would have returned is wasted money.

Vehicles Lost Before Patch 1.0.3

If you demolished a Garage on launch day and the vehicles disappeared, the research for this page found no confirmed way to bring them back:

  • The patch notes do not promise restoration. They describe what happens when you demolish a Garage now. Guides written after the patch also note that 1.0.3 preserves vehicles but does not promise to restore earlier losses.
  • Save repair is not a rollback. Patch 1.0.3 added automatic repair for damaged saves from a backup or a recent snapshot, with a message when a repair happens. That protects against corrupted files; it is not a tool to undo a demolition you chose to make.
  • Player reports say saves are not a free undo. At launch, a player noted that reloading was not a reliable way to reverse a bad placement.

The practical path is to check the Garage store on 1.0.3 for anything still listed as owned, then rebuy what is missing. If you think a vehicle should have been kept, report it through the official community channels, the Steam discussions or the official Discord, with the version you were on when it happened.

Protect Cargo and Upgrades Before Demolishing

The patch notes protect the vehicles themselves. They say nothing about what is inside them or inside the Garage, so empty everything you can first.

  • Unload the vehicle's hopper. Use the Garage's unloading area and make sure the dust leaves through a connected conveyor route. A full hopper of a Lunar Sweeper holds up to 1,200 kg and a Mega Vacuum Rover starts at 3,000 kg, which is a lot to risk.
  • Let stored dust move on. A Garage's storage can fill up when vehicles unload faster than the belts carry dust away. Give the line time to clear before demolishing.
  • Note your vehicle upgrade levels. Write down speed and storage levels before demolishing, then compare after you recall the vehicle. Patch 1.0.3 says any Garage can upgrade owned vehicles, but it does not explicitly say upgrade levels survive a demolition.
  • Park nothing important inside. With the vehicle out on open ground, you can see it the whole time.

Co-op Notes

Vehicle ownership in co-op is less clear than upgrades. At launch, the Garage's own description said each player buys their own vehicles. Patch 1.0.3 made the Upgrade Matrix shared across the crew, but its vehicle notes talk about "your vehicles" without stating how crews share them.

  • The player who bought the vehicle should do the Call back if another player cannot see it in their store.
  • All crewmates must be on 1.0.3, or the session will not run together.
  • Agree before demolishing a shared Garage, because several players may have vehicles stored in it.
  • Check the store before buying again. If the store shows Call back for a vehicle, it already exists in that world.

Troubleshooting a Missing Vehicle

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Version: confirm the game is on 1.0.3 or later. The vehicle-preservation change does not exist in earlier builds.
  2. Other Garages: open every Garage you own. Vehicles move to another Garage when one is demolished.
  3. No Garage at all: build one; vehicles wait for the next Garage on 1.0.3.
  4. Occupied bay: drive the current vehicle out, then try Call back again.
  5. Right world: in co-op, confirm you are in the host's world where the vehicle was bought.
  6. Demolished before the patch: if the store shows a purchase price, the save no longer counts the vehicle as owned.

If all six checks pass and the vehicle is still missing, report it with your version number and what you did before it disappeared. The developers' October 24 message says they are still working on remaining bugs and reading reports.

Demolish a Garage Safely From Now On

On 1.0.3, demolishing a Garage is a reasonable way to reorganise a base, as long as you follow a short routine:

  1. Unload every vehicle and let the Garage's stored dust clear.
  2. Drive vehicles out onto open ground.
  3. Note vehicle upgrade levels.
  4. Build the replacement Garage, or confirm another one exists.
  5. Demolish the old Garage in Remove mode, reading the refund first.
  6. Call back each vehicle at the remaining Garage and check its upgrades.
